guest/another "user"

am staying with friends and tried installing the guest/ 2nd user application on a WindXP pc but although I achieved opening the account the programs on the admin account wont work in the "new" users one. I cannot access chrome, et al via star menu or else. I get asked "with what program should we open this lkink" and the list.
Can you help me? what am I doing wrong?
