File Extensions Not Working Correctly

Hello! Essentially, I am running Windows XP SP3. I had the misfortune of experiencing some problems with my Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2013 software where it just stopped and would no longer work. I called the maker and was advised to remove the current copy and did but it would not delete all of the items in the program. I tried as best I could and got most of them out. However, shortly thereafter I started experiencing a problem with File Extensions, specifically when I downloaded software programs. Before this happened they would all download correctly with the .exe file that I could just click on and it would immediately open up the program. Now however, when I try to download software all that downloads is: setup.exe.part -or- exe.part But the other problem is that it now asks 'What Program do you want to use to open this file with' which it did not do before. When I use the button for the options, a program to actually open such files as the ones mentioned above does not appear to exist. I guess I need a RAR software utility to open these files now but even if I download one it will also appear as "exe.part" or something similar and again clicking on it will only bring up the 'what program do you want to use to open this file' so I am not able to use that downloaded file to open up the program. Buying a utility from a software store to open the programs would cost about $40.00 which I would rather not spend if there is a work-around solution to just downloading a free program from the web. Does anyone have any idea(s) as to how I could rectify this concern to get it going as before? Thank you for your help in this matter!

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Hey all, hope someone can help me I turned on my XP Media Centre Edition laptop today and it gave me the following message:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

So after swearing I googled it and found the Microsoft fix page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

Now I realised I dont have the cd for the laptop as it never came with it, luckily I have a XP Home Edition OS CD and after more googling I thought it'll have to do. So enetered repair console doodah and completed these sections of the Microsoft guide:

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

After each copy line it told me 1 file was copied but after the delete lines it told me nothing. Going onto the next section I entered the following:

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system

hit return and it said "The system cannot find the file specified". After many more swearwords I googled some more and found various posts on various sites but none matching my issue. One did suggest to use a KNOPPIX GNU/Linux CD to bypass stage one of the Microsoft guide and activate the system restore directly but it didnt explain how to use it and I think its beyond me to figure it out. I'm thinking perhaps its cos I'm using a Home edition CD on a Media Centre edition system or I'm missing something obvious - if anyone has any suggestions or knows what I can do to rectify the issue that would be really great otherwise I'm gonna have to do a new install which i really dont want to do unless i have no other choice.
Thanks for reading :)

Hi
My desktop was fine, but earlier today slowed down dramatically. I suspect (really just a guess!) that it may be linked to CutePDF which I have used for ages. Spoolsv is taking about 98% of the available CPU. Attached is the TSG log:

Just had an overhaul done on an old dell desktop. I'm not sure exactly what the guy did or how he did it(my wife's doing), but everything seems reloaded properly. I had to take it out of diagnostic and into normal mode, but I'm still having problems getting any connection to the internet. Please advise.

COM1 advanced settings

An acquaintance gave me the link to your answer to a specific question I had asked him, namely 'how do I make an advanced setting for COM1 serial port when I get a message saying that I need write privilege in the registry for 'this device'. I am the administrator on my machine and I have a label printer hooked up to COM1 on a WIN2k system and need to change a setting I believe it has regarding a FIFO buffer. I also have an XP system on another machine and always get the same impediments as I do on WIN2k. I can't get into that advanced setting when I click the 'Advanced' button in the COM1 port settings window.

But when I tried your suggested solution, adding values into the registry path "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
system\current......pnp0501\1\Device Parameters" (trying to add a binary value into the right pane for the above branch) I just get a message saying "Cannot create value: Error writing to the registry". Foiled again!
Same thing happens, by the way, if I try this on my XP machine. Do administrators get no respect?

When I click on a link on a word document or on excel, I am unable to open the link and I get the following message:

I am the only operator and I did not place any restrictions.

Solved: Password Problem - Must I Reinstall OS?

Dell Dimension 5100 desktop running XP Home SP3 - bought a new monitor and a week later BSOD.

I can't see how there's any relation between the 2 things, but all of a sudden I'm getting a 0X7B on boot. Investigation seems to point in multiple directions - corrupt HDD, bad driver of some sort, etc.

I booted with a Dell XP Home CD, figuring I'd run Fixboot and Fixmbr from the repair console. Wrong! I type in the R, type 1 for the C:/Windows installation, hit [Enter] for the Administartor's password,.... and get no further. In all the years I've had this tower there has never been any sort of password protection until Windows starts - then we've got email passwords, forum passwords, etc. But here I am getting invalid password returns from the repair console. I've gone into the setup screen and under Security 2 types of passwords are listed - I think one's a BIOS password and the other's an Administrator pswd. Both say Not Setup.

So I use an old Winternals CD and go to a command prompt. Fixboot and Fixmbr are not valid commands. So with the same disk I access System Restore, wanting to go back a day or so. Wrong again - no restore points exist.

Then I try a Spotmau utility CD - no Fixboot or Fixmbr there either - also no restore points.

Then I go back to the Dell Home CD, hit enter to install the OS, click on Windows Home and type R. It copies a mess of stuff, and when it gets to 100% it reboots. I do not press any key, but when it finally displays something, it's a light blue Windows setup screen with white writing Setup is being restarted..., which is only there for a few seconds before the screen goes dark, I get the cursor arrow, and a box pops up that says When trying to update a password, this return status indicates that the value provided by the current password is not correct (it only displays for about a half second), and it reboots, going into the same setup will continue, invalid password loop.

I am befuddled. I haven't played with a UBCD or Hiren's disk, but I have no reason to think I'll get different rssults.

Is a total reinstall my only option?

A file is missing or corrupt..Please Help!!!

The computer has always started up fine until the other day when windows xp didnt load and this message appeared "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM..You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen too start repair.

Why did the computer do that & what does that all mean? The only cd's i found for the computer was a motherboard cd and a recovery cd for windows xp. I did what the instructions said & loaded both cd's but nothing happened and just went back too the message screen that i mentioned here...how do i fix this problem..any help will be greatly appreciated!..thankyou! :)

black screen w/cursor after "Disk Antivirus Pro" virus

Windows XP/SP3 (fully updated)

was working on windows phone problem
got the "Disk Antivirus Professional" virus
I immediately disconnected my ethernet cable
and went to TASK MANAGER and started deleting all suspicious services
I errantly deleted a svhost file and it went into shutdown mode
upon reboot I got a black screen with only the mouse cursor, which moves fine.
I tried to reinstall windows XP from OEM disk, went through entire procedure
Still boots to black screen w/cursor
tried safe mode = black screen w/ cursor & safe mode in corners
finally got to safe mode with command prompt (but still no screen)
From cmd; regedit - I cannot find any of the files that are associated with "Disk Antivirus Professional" - ie "random.exe", etc.

I've searched all I can about this and cannot find a fix.
Someone please point me in the right direction.

I still have cmd up on the computer, I'm afraid to close it again.

Firefox causing problems

My brother is using windows XP now with Firefox. A friend suggested using Firefox instead of IE and installed it saying he could use either browser. IE no longer responded so he had tech from ISP camera PC and he said he could not see why it did not work so must not be compatible with Firefox and uninstalled IE. Did not like Firefox so tried several times to reinstall IE and it will not work. Also emails that require PPS viewer and Microsoft Word are not responding with Firefox and asks to go to control panel and designate where to open them. Emails with .eml do same thing. Can IE be reinstalled to work or did "friend" corrupt something?

Computer really slows down over the coarse of and hour

Background - This began happening two days ago. I didn't install anything new, maybe a java update, but nothing that I remember. On boot up the computer works fine, but over the coarse of an hour it really slows down to the point that it becomes impossible to use. This is a work computer. I've tried various combinations of programs to see if it was a program that was causing it but even when I left it on over night with just malwarebytes running, the next morning it was slow.

The most common programs used on this computer are Catia V5 (3d solid modeling program), outlook and firefox. Those are typically on all day.

Like I said, this just started a couple of days ago, before then it was working great.

Computer specs:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition
Version 2003
Service pack 2

Intel (R) Core(TM) i7 CPU
860@2.80GHz
2.79GHz, 7.93 GB of Ram

Thanks in advance.
