Solved: IrFanView Cropping

The cropping feature of IrFanView does not work or I am not using it properly. I am using version 4.35. I recently uninstalled and reinstalled the program, but still can't get the cropping feature to work. In the following tests that I performed, I started with a 2048x1536x24BPP photo [4:3 ratio] and attempted to crop it to obtain a photo with a 3:2 ratio. I initially put the photo, named x.jpg in My Documents, and opened IrFanView program. I performed various operations the results of which are reported below. In all cases files were created which appeared in the My Document Folder and in the Thumbnail listing of the IrFanView program.

Test 1
FILE> Thumbnails > My Documents > Double clicked x.jpg [Photo appears in main window]
Edit > Create Custom Crop Selection > Select 3:2 > Save and apply to image > Held Control key and clicked dragged to obtain an 819x 546 rectangular box > File > Save as > typed Test 1 > Save

Results of test
Opened Test 1.jpg in My Documents with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer [ no cropping]
In IrFanView Thumbnail Listing, Text 1.jpg is shown with no cropping. When double clicked it is shown in main window with no cropping.

Test 2
FILE> Thumbnails > My Documents > Double clicked x.jpg [Photo appears in main window]
Edit > Create Custom Crop Selection > Select 3:2 > Save and apply to image > Held Control key and clicked dragged to obtain an 819x 546 rectangular box > Move curser inside box [+] and left clicked to obtain zoomed image File > Save as > typed Test 2 > Save

Results of test
Opened Test 2.jpg in My Documents with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer [ no cropping]
In IrFanView Thumbnail Listing, Text 2.jpg is shown with no cropping. When double clicked it is shown in main window with no cropping.

Test 3
FILE> Thumbnails > My Documents > Double clicked x.jpg [Photo appears in main window]
Edit > Create Custom Crop Selection > Select 3:2 > Save and apply to image > Held Control key and clicked dragged to obtain an 819x 546 rectangular box > Move curser inside box [+] and left clicked to obtain zoomed image Edit > Capture Visible Window area > Save as > typed Test 3 > Save

Results of test
Opened Test 1.jpg in My Documents with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer [ cropped photo is shown]
In IrFanView Thumbnail Listing, Text 3.jpg is shown with cropping. When double clicked it is shown in main window with cropping. However, the cropping in all instances is with a 4:3 ratio, not a 3:2 ratio.

Test 4
File > Open with an external editor > Picasa3 > Cropped in Picasa3 with 4x6 > Saved File in My Documents as Test 4

Results of test
Opened Test 4.jpg in My Documents with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer [ cropped photo is shown]
In IrFanView Thumbnail Listing, Text 4.jpg is shown with cropping. When double clicked it is shown in main window with cropping. In all instances the Ratio is 3:2.

Test 5
FILE> Thumbnails > My Documents > Double clicked x.jpg [Photo appears in main window]
Edit > Create Custom Crop Selection > Select 3:2 > Save and apply to image > Held Control key and clicked dragged to obtain an 819x 546 rectangular box Options > JPG Lossless Crop > Start

Results of test
Opened Test 5.jpg in My Documents with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer [ cropped photo is shown]
In IrFanView Thumbnail Listing, Text 5.jpg is shown with NO cropping. When double clicked it is shown in main window with cropping. In all instances the Ratio is 3:2.

Note: When further editing was performed on Test 5.jpg and saved, it then appeared in the Thumbnail listing as cropped.

Can anyone explain to me why the basic cropping operations of this program don't seem to work or what I am doing wrong in my procedures.

Issues with Windows XP; potential virus issue

Hello. These past few days I've been experiencing strange issues with my computer, which could potentially be attributed to some type of virus. I have been unable to open any programs on my computer. Whenever I try to open my Internet browser or some other program, all I see is the hourglass icon. This icon does not go away and will appear when I click on a program, right click, or click any other part of the screen. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Trying to reinstall

We have a Dell inspiron B130 which we got in 1996. It had a new harddrive installed 2 years ago. It is now my husband's computer. He wanted to wipe it clean after he backed up the files to an external harddrive.

We turned it on and hit F12. That brought us to a screen with several choices, one of which was CD. We put in the original disk sent with computer. It ran through everything and then we got a msg that said we needed the XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, which said it was on the original disk we were loading from. We had a disk we ordered from Dell entitled XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 so we loaded it. Then we got this message:

Error
The signature for Windows XP Home Edition setup is invalid. The error code is 800b0100. No signature was present in the subject.

Fatal Error
Setup failed to install the product catalogues. This is a fatal error. The setup log files should contain more information.

Where do we go from here? Thanks in advance. I've used your site before and it was excellent.:)

I have this printer, and have had it boxed for years. I last used it on Win98 and now I would like to use it on XP home. I hooked it up to my USB port, but when I go to system there is a yellow question mark on it. I have tried to download all kinds of software and drivers for this to get it to work, but no luck. Does anyone know the software and drivers i need, and where I might download them so I can use it without buying a new one?

XP won't load - can't boot from CD - HELP

I have an Acer One netbook (it has no floppy or cd but I have an external cd that I have been using to try to fix from) It is loaded with XPSP3
When I went to load XP the other day, I got BlueScreen saying there was an error in system32/config

I have tried everything I know to get it to work with no luck. I can access the drive fine using puppy linux and have copied the data files that I wanted to keep and figured I would just reformat the drive and reinstall XP. I have tried every bootable CD (including the original XP disk) that I could find on the net and I cannot get anything to start without it coming back to the same error screen. The only thing that I have been able to get to work was the puppy linux boot cd. I am pretty sure the HD is still good since I was able to see and access files using puppy. I really don't want to buy a new HD for it as it is not worth it at this point. What else can I try to fix this and/or reinstall Windows XP??

Thanks!

All 3 of them are not working for me. I'm using another computer just to type this.
The HTTP, HTTPS, FTP diagnostic reads:

sfc /scannow at end of run wants CD2

$

Here is the fix for sfc /scannow asking for XP Professional CD2. Which as far as I am concerned is just an error on the os creation side of Microsoft as there is NO Win XP Pro CD2. Unless you consider WMediaCenter the second edition of XP Pro. This error is caused by Windows Media Center OS.
This afternoon I searched for the answer and here is what worked for me: EDIT REGISTRY WITH CAUTION< BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO
Start, run, regedit, Hkey Local Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/setup, when opened, look for the last item which is Source Path, open this to edit it and as it was not reading my C: for a repair, I had to redirect the path to D: or whatever letter for the cd drive that has your original os cd, once changed, hit retry and then SFC will read that drive and finish correctly. Leave regedit open so that you can change the letter back to C: or your windows drive for future functions.

Obviously you would not like it to look for a repair in the C: drive as this is where it has found errors, so it is best to direct it to the cd rom original files. And as someone pointed out they copied i386 to C so it could look there, it won't, because sfc is not designed to look to C for repair, it wants the cd rom drive.

I had to assume that sfc is designed that way after looking at alot of computers that had the source path already on C:

If you run sfc /scannow on Windows XP Professional w/SP2 it will immediately prompt you for your Win XP Pro w/SP2 cd, and then proceed with Windows File Protection.

But make a note of this for future Windows Media Center sfc /scannow runs.

This was my original post in 2009 but today in Jan 2013 I am at the end of a Media Center 2005 w/update Rollup 2 (No SP3 disk) sfc /scannow and it wants the XP Pro CD2 and I have tried every version of XP and had to cancel my sfc right at the end which I assume it is looking for SP3. So I am going to slipstream SP3 into Media Center 2005 and see if that will work.
Usually it asks for the CD2 at the beginning of the scan and if the registry is changed to look in the cd-rom drive it will complete with no problem. But I do not run scans of Media Center that often so I will continue trying to find a way to complete this sfc scan.

Windows preparing to standby

Hi

I have searched the forums and found a few similar complaints, but not quite the same.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, maybe about 5 years old. All of a sudden it started yesterday to turn off unexpectedly in the middle of work. Sometimes it just goes black and you hear the Windows sound signaling shut off and other times I get to see the small notice saying "Windows is preparing to stand by" I am able to revive it by just pressing the Power button and it takes me exactly to the same spot I was working on. I have it set for Never Standby in the Power Management.

I have cleaned the keyboard and fans. I tried to do a restore to an earlier date (not possible). I did a whole Scan disk , the one where you fix bad sectors and restores the bad sectors in Windows. I have done defrag, scan disk . Well... I dont know what else to do. Can anyone please give me some other ideas? I cannot spend a lot of money since I am currently unemployed and trying to make a living from my computer doing graphics, but cannot spend big amounts of money. I will have to try myself as much as I can. My computer has 4G Ram. It has Windows XP.

If anyone can help please I will be forever grateful.

Thank you so much

Ivonne

I'm trying to install Gladinet. It says I need .net framework 2.0.50727. So I installed .net framework 4.whatever. Gladinet says I still need the older version. So I try to install 3.5 which I've read has 2.0.50727 included, but it won't install and the error log says something like "version 2.0a not installed". WTH? I can't make out which version on the MS site is 2.0a. Can someone help me out?

Why don't they just include all the older versions with the newest version, for crimeny?

Solved: Registry problems - self inflicted

I have a hard drive that I use as a "sand box" for testing software (mostly free ware), de bugging conflicts with different programs, manipulation of photo data and youtube videos. I keep my computer system (Sony Media Center, running Win Xp) on it's side and leave the computer case open. This allows me to change drives easily and protects the data and configuration of the "real" set up. I use Acronis 9 to create images of every drive I have. The problem I created is: using the factory restoration discs I reformatted the sand box drive and cleaned up the registry with CCleaner (big mistake) and restarted the system. Now I get the message that the system does not see any hard drives. The problem is persistent across any drive normally functioning drive I put into the system (including the real setup). Help!!!

Hi Guys,

I'm having some trouble running old games that I just installed. They are Empire Earth 2 Gold and Stronghold 2 Deluxe (both 'Sold Out' software published) and they both installed and loaded fine. Yet, after some time (about 5 mins with Empire Earth) the screen goes black and the PC reboots instantly, no blue screen, no error messages. Then XP goes into disk checking mode (doesn't find any bad sectors). This only happens in other applications very rarely, say once a month. I seem to remember other games having this problem but these are the only two I have tried lately.

I had the Yorkshire Police ransomware about six months ago which was removed (with some effort) and didn't appear to lock any of my files like it's reported to do. I've run various malware software after this and never find any trace of it so I assume that's gone.

I've updated the NViDIA drivers.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
