I received this Toshiba laptop from my ex-husband when he got his new desktop. When I tried to make the laptop mobile, it didn't want to start up and after about 20 minutes got a gray or black screen with no cursor. I had been at a public library, so I took it upstairs to the children's section with my daughter plugged it in and read a book hoping for results. It eventually did pull the windows logo but was very slow to surf internet which is odd. Couldn't get anything done. So I took it home, and hoped to get things fixed.
It would load up to the Windows 7 welcome page with no name of user or logos, just some white leaf tracings.
I have done the following things:
On startup, I have
Used f8, f10, changed the configuration of the boot so it would start on cd. I have used the Windows 7 cd from the last Windows install, it went to startup repair several times, but never got fully functional, got into the safe mode about three times but to no avail.
After not being able to use Windows 7 for several days over the winter holiday break, I finally put an old version of Ubuntu 10.4 LTU 32 that I have had in my cupboard.
It was able to install that system and surf the internet, and upgraded to 12.04. However after two to three days, after being shut down and turned back on again, it seems to have amnesia. It was trying to pull up ubuntu recovery of which I am clueless to do the prompts.
I had taken it to a used parts/repair store but I am on a limited budget. the store kindly burned a malware remover tool and all in one repair kit from majorgeek.com. did not find malware and did get the repair kit to work without finding huge issues.
I actually am typing on said pc now, and am back to using the Ubuntu 10.4 LTU. Hoping to find a boot repair download that will run on this system.
This version of Wine on the system doesn't want to run exe files because it says they aren't from a secure source.
I am waiting for a system restore CD from Toshiba in the mail. Was shipped 12/31/2012. cause the clerk at the used parts/repair store said ugh toshiba is a mess without their own cd.
So I am a student, I don't have hardly any money, waiting on my student loan which might arrive next month. So a cost effective solution would be much appreciated. My main source of income is child support which is receive from a different ex-husband. The only knowledge I have from this pc is that it had problem overheating, so the 2nd ex husband had removed panels on the bottom of the laptop and I have a laptop cooler
the model number is a365d s6930
AMD Turion 64
ATI
