Yesterday a bsod appeared on my computer, saying:
A problem has been detected and windows had been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time youve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86F668D8, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)
The bsod appears at each reboot. At first appearance I wasnt doing anything particular, it seemed to happen when I closed Firefox. No installations or updates were running. Now I have tried the following:
A) At startup: "F9, Xpress Recovery": this quickly ends up with the message HD does not support HPA! Press any key to exit.
B) Selecting the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console: ends up with the message The file usbuhci.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue, Any key results in Setup failed. Press any key to restart your computer.
C) Selecting a different startup mode: each way of startup ends up with the bsod (safe mode, last know good configuration etc). No way to enter Windows.
D) Using the Windows installation CD, in order to choose the Repair option. However, the Repair option does not appear! I can just choose to reinstall Windows on a new partition. Choosing that warns me that the HDD will be formatted, so no way. I do remember that when using the same CD in the past, it did give me the choice to either repair or install Windows. None of that now.
E) In the BIOS Setup it seems that the HDD is working just fine.
My computer is a AMD Athlon 64 3000 desktop with Windows XP professional.
An extensive search to similar problems doesnt get me any solution. I hope anyone can figure out a way to get Windows working again without losing any files!!
