Hi guys,
I'm new to this site and I joined because I'm having a few bizarre issues with a PC in my workplace. I'll separate them into different threads and use this one to talk about an issue with desktop icons. I noticed that a few people have mentioned this problem on this site but there didn't seem to be any permanent resolution.
The issue is this: A few weeks back, one of the users that I support reported that all of his desktop icons had changed. I connected to his PC and confirmed that they had all changed to the generic Windows 7 icon (shortcuts and actual programs in the programs menu). I logged on as administrator to make a few adjustments (thinking it was a profile issue) to find that whilst logged on as admin I was also seeing the generic icons. I tried the usual - right click on an icon and try to change it manually but this option was not available and was greyed out. I then deleted the icon cache under AppData and rebooted the PC but this had no effect. I even went into the registry and tried to modify it there (following instructions I found on a tech site) but the problem persisted.
I have scoured the Internet trying to find a solution to this problem and every page I go to seems to be a dead end and nobody has found a solution that works. This has got to be a Windows problem and I would be flabbergasted if Windows didn't have some sort of fix for this. Has anybody come across this issue before?
