Sony VAIO performing poorly (fixed once, problems returned)

Hi, all!

So, my Sony VAIO which is close to 9 years old is having some performance issues. Namely, it's being slow. Very slow. I had made a post about this not too long ago and was able to get the computer running at its peak once more, but that only lasted a little while. I followed the recommended regular maintenance after the assistance on the forum but it seems that it hasn't kept the computer up to speed. The post was here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp...sony-vaio.html
I was thrilled with the assistance I received but I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with this, and perhaps offer a new perspective on the situation?
Also, a new problem has cropped: A bubble pop up has been coming up and won't close, it comes back up almost immediately if I close it. The bubble pop up is "HDD Protection: Hard disk drive protection engaged."
And another thing is something I've never dealt with is that my System Restore never works. Whenever I attempt to use it, it appears to finish, but on the start up screen, it says the system restore failed and didn't go through. It's been like that as long as I can remember.
Those two issues are smaller fish to fry, however. Think anyone might be able to help re-fix the slowness?

Specs:
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 CPU T7400 @ 2.16GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400

Thanks!
Wolf
