Windows XP Troubles Please Help!!

Hello everyone. I recently received an Acer TravelMate 2480 laptop for free.
When I first got the computer it was chock full of junk but it worked ok. The speed was fine for the games I wanted to play and the applications I wanted to run.

Originally it had Windows XP Home and I decided to reformat and put XP Pro and Ubuntu on it. So I proceeded to reformat and install Ubuntu. Once I had it installed it ran very poorly, (laggy, choppy, and very slow.) So I decided to skip the Ubuntu and just reformat and use XP Pro instead.

After I got XP Pro on it it ran very poorly still. I went to Acer's website and installed all of the original drivers on it. The problem still didn't get any better. It performs very poorly. When I start programs that used to start very quickly (before the reformat) they delay now anywhere from 1 - 30 seconds before starting. Some don't start at all. It's just generally very slow and now when I run games like Counter-Strike 1.6 (which ran flawlessly before the reformat) it acts like it can't even handle it. The animations are slow and choppy.

I enabled automatic update and it installed 3 updates right after I finished installing Windows but now it shows the yellow shield icon in the bottom right and when I mouse over it it says "Downloading updates 0%" and it wont move. I also tried to use the windows update site but all it does is say that its searching for updates for my computer and wont go any further.

It should also be noted that the copy of Windows I used is the same I have put on other machines before with no issues. Also now, (not sure if this is important) when I reformatted I didn't partition it I made it one large drive. Before the reformat it was divided into 2 partitions. I'm at my wit's end.
