XP recovery crashes

XP Restore on recovery CD just crashes. As I go to type Chkdsk, the system appears to time out and completely turns off.

My systems is the continual loop of start up, on to start up options 'safe mode' etc......it won't even start up going back to a previous configuration.

Please help me get it restored without losing all the date.
