This problem crops up in different forms from year to year. See forum thread "Can't open Web links from
Outlook to Internet Explorer", last post 01 August 2012. A number of complicated solutions have been
proposed on some forums. Here is a simple one that worked for me using Windows XP.
Firstly I have fixed this problem on my computer and am not asking for help - for the moment, but I believe
the actual problem goes deeper than this and could recurr and would be interested to know more.
However, for those having trouble now my problems started yesterday when on shutting down the computer I
got a message " Vprotect application has encountered a problem and needs to close" I cancelled this and
the computer shut down. No worries, it's bedtime.
However, after restarting and using email I found that links to Internet Explorer browser would not connect.
The computer froze. I tried many times and many ways - same result.
With the Task Manager - Ctl Alt Del - I ended the email or browser program concerned and got back to the
desktop with computer still running and no longer frozen.
I shut down with no more messages about Vprotect and restarted ok, but links still would not open, just froze
again.
On browsing the internet I learned that Vprotect is part of the AVG antivirus program and AVG toolbar which I
use. I don't know whether the problem is an AVG fault, but I just disabled the AVG toolbar and the problem has
gone away.
To do this, go to Internet Explorer and find the AVG toolbar icon at left hand side of the Explorer heading.
R click on this > Get window showing choices including Avg Security Toolbar.
If this is checked with a tick, L click on it and click on Disable.
You will notice the AVG toolbar disappear.
You could completely uninstall the toolbar, but no need to for me anyway.
I understand AVG still works fine without this toolbar. Good luck. :)
