windows xp says I have no internet -

I just reformatted my laptop, it had windows 7 and ubuntu lucid on it. I dropped back to windows xp so I could use my old aiptek tablet but now windows xp won't connect to the internet. My internet is working fine on the same laptop under Ubuntu Precise. I'm so puzzled and don't have a clue where to begin to remedy this problem. The diagnostic says I have no modem or internet card??

We have cable internet which I have set up as wired.

I'd love some help with this,
