Solved: Windows media player Wont play DVD's

Hi there, I am having great difficulty playing DVD's via windows media Player 11

Strange thing is I can play CD's but when I try to play a DVD I get this message: Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted.

It's a working DVD it plays in my other DVD Player.

Thanks

Solved: Safely Remove Hardware

I have Win XP, Firefox, & Thunderbird. Along with the other icons on the bottom of the screen, there's one that says "Safely Remove Hardware". What's that supposed to be telling me, and why?

Logon Password.

Hi,
Does anyone know a way of being able to startup a pc & login to windows bypassing the user password, - - AND - - still have to enter a screensaver password to log back in if the screensaver starts.
Or some other simple workable solution to this prob.

Preferably without installing any third party apps, cos this pc is slow enough. :D

This is wanted for an old pc that takes ages to boot, So once the power button is pressed, it can boot straight to windows in its own time with no other user input.
But if the pc is left unattended, it needs to be locked, manually (or automatically if left on for a period of time) to keep kids off it.

Thanks for any replies

Lost files and boot problems

Hi Guys, I have experienced a problem on my Sony Vaio VGC-V3S (2001) running XP. The computer suddenly would not boot up and showed the following error message

*** STOP: 0x000000BE (0xF694260,0x10c8B121,0xF7730BC4,0x0000000B)

*** nv4_mini.sys - Address F694263D base at F689C000, DateStamp 4074b958

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump completed
Contact your ........etc

The only way I have been able to boot is by using ISO images of specialist boot CD's such as Bitdeffender, Hirons, AVG system recovery etc.

Looking on the various forums it suggested all I needed to do was boot using a recovery package look for the file nv4_mini.sys and rename it nv4_mini.sys.old this would stop the looping of the boot process and allow the PC to boot normally then down load and reinstall the file nv4_mini.sys

OK so I did this rename (booting using CD) finding the file in C: drivers along with all other files in the C: being visible. Then I rebooted but the PC would still not boot and kept looping. I rebooted using a recovery CD only now the C: drive shows no files what so ever but when checking the partition structure it shows no free space all 30gig full. D: drive is still fine and using Aviria I was able to copy all of my 450gig of data to a remote hard drive so all this is safe. Problem is my D: only had trivia, photos, music etc my C: drive has some important files that I really need, accounts, personal correspondence etc.

Can any body help I need to find out if I can recover the data files from my C: drive

I am writing this from my lap top so have not added the sysinfo from this PC

Thanks Noel

Solved: Accessing DOS in WinXP?

I accidently installed an old program in Windows XP Home. Now the only way to remove it is to use DOS commands. I'm
not even sure WinXP even uses the DOS system. However in the event it still uses DOS how can I access the DOS system to send commands?
The program involved doesn't show up anywhere in my computer except in the programs menu. The readme file in the programs menu says I need to send DOS commands to remove the files.

Any help?

Hello,
I am having problems with svchost.exe file running at 40-50% all the time. I've traced problems with Windows Firewall not starting and BITS not starting and netman.dll restarting constantly. I cannot figure out what services are not enabled that need to be running. I have run PC Fix from microsoft and that was completely useless. I am running Windows XP Professional with SP3 and all latest updates. I have onboard NIC which never shows up in Network Connections. I have been spinning my wheels on this for many months now and still no closer to fixing the problem.
Please help!!!

I have been trying to setup my operating system for use after it had a virus. I am not sure what kind of virus. I ran a malwarebytes full scan and went to bed the the next day it was frozen. I powered off using the button and when I powered it back on it said windows is missing or corrupt. That I should use the orinal setup disc and press "r". So I went thrum the steps on a site I found to repair this issue. Now it is on the blue screen and is stuck at 69% "setup is formatting". I am afraid to power off for fear that I will make matters worse. The computer is a dell optiplex gx620 with a win pro x p OS. What should I do?

Backing up Old Desktop with WD External HD

$

Hey Everyone,

I have an old Compaq desktop computer that is running Windows XP (Version 2002, Service Pack 2). I haven't used this desktop in awhile but I booted it up yesterday to backup all the files on it using my WD My Passport External 465GB Hard Drive. I want to wipe the Compaq's HD, drill through it, and then sent it off to get recycled.

The External HD is connected to a Belkin USB 4-Port Ultra MiniHub which I connected to the Compaq. After use the Belkin USB hub it did not have trouble seeing the external HD and I was able to launch the WD SmartWare app to start the backup.

I got the backup going but the data transfer was extremely slow so I just left it. I assumed I could just come back after it was done.

I got up this morning and noticed the WD SmartWare app was closed. When I tried to click around the Compaq restarted. I launnched the WD SmartWare app again but it the WD SmartWare software will not show any "Data For Backup" it just stays blank even though I tried relaunching it several times.

So I guess I am wondering;
  • What software should I use to backup the files from this Compaq desktop?
  • Is there any way to speed up the data transfer rate?
  • How do I ensure the files are backed up properly on the external HD?
Desktop Specs

Compaq Presario
Intel III 497 MHz/384 MB of RAM
120 GB HD

I also have two other old Compaq desktops I would like to backup the files from before I take them apart and send them off to RIP. Any help, advice, or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

-Thanks
